Windows Vista: Operating System Updates

As new security threats and bugs emerge, Microsoft releases security updates that you should apply immediately. Microsoft also releases enhancements to the Operating System and their other products through the Windows Update feature. We recommend you configure Windows Update to automatically check for updates weekly.

Each update can take 10-15 minutes and the entire process could take more than an hour, depending on how many updates are required.

  1. Open the Start Menu (located in the lower left-hand corner of your screen, then click All Programs. Click Windows Update.

  2. The Windows Update window will open. Click Get updates for more products in the right-hand pane. This will ensure you are downloading updates for Windows as well as other Microsoft products, such as Office.

  3. Your web browser will be opened and will take you to the Windows Vista Microsoft Update Website. Check the box next to I accept the Terms of Use, then click Install.

  4. If you have User Account Control enabled you may see a window asking if you would like to allow this operation. Select Allow.

  5. Click Install updates .

  6. Click Restart Now. You computer will restart and all updates will be applied.
