Macintosh: Backing Up Your Bookmarks
This page contains instructions for backing up your Internet browser bookmarks or favorites. We suggest you back these files up to the file server.
For instructions for connecting to the file server and locating your personal folder, see Mac OS X: Access Your File Server Folders.
Throughout this document, *words in italics* indicates the type of information that will appear, but what appears for you will depend on your own username, or hard drive name, etc.
Firefox
- From the Bookmarks menu, choose Organize Bookmarks
- From the File menu, choose Export
- Select the location where you want to save the bookmarks.html file. If you are on
campus, save it directly to the file server. Otherwise, remember the
location where you save the file, and copy it to a backup storage
device when you are finished.
- Click Save

Your bookmarks are located in * Macintosh HD*\Users\*Username*\Library\Mozilla\Profiles\*Profilename*\
*Randomcharacters*\bookmarks.html
Copy this file to the server by dragging it to your personal file server folder.
Safari
- From the File menu, choose Export Bookmarks
- Select the location where you want to save the Safari Bookmarks file. If you are on
campus, save it directly to the file server. Otherwise, remember the
location where you save the file, and copy it to a backup storage
device when you are finished. Safari Bookmarks
In case you are interested, your Safari bookmarks are located in
*Macintosh HD*\Users\*Username*\Library\Safari\bookmarks.plist
Note: you can import bookmarks from a saved backup by choosing Import Bookmarks from the File menu.
