Computer Replacement Cycle: Overview

The information on this page is intended for faculty and staff preparing for the replacement of a Simmons computer.

What to do immediately

As of November 2007, through the Technology Replacement Cycle, Technology will begin to replace all Simmons Windows computers with machines running Windows Vista and Office 2007.  As of March 2008, all Simmons Macintosh computers will start being replaced with machines running Leopard (OS X.5) and Office 2008.  Everyone should take a moment now to check through What Should I Figure Out Now?   It includes such topics as:

  • How do I know when my computer is up for replacement?
  • Is the software I use compatible with the new operating systems and versions of Office?
  • Can I have my desktop computer replaced with a laptop computer? Or, I have a laptop now, can I have it replaced with a laptop?
[Yes, but the pre-approval and purchase process take time, so get started well in advance.]
  • Can I switch to a Macintosh? Or to a Windows computer?

What to do just before the computer replacement

If the computer you use will be replaced within the next several weeks, there are a few preparations you must make, and some questions you might like answered. Check My Computer is Going to be Replaced Soon for answers to such questions as:

  • How do I make sure I have what I need on the new computer?
  • When will my computer replacement take place?
  • Will I have access to all of my old and current files on the new computer?
  • How can I get training on the new operating systems and versions of Office?
