Laptop Travel Tips
A laptop is not only a useful tool, but also stores data, which could include college or personal confidential information. Technology provides this list of travel tips to assist you in ensuring the safety and security of a laptop while you are traveling. We urge you to follow these directions as you travel to help you maintain the security of both physical and intellectual property. Whether you travel with a Simmons-owned laptop or your personally-owned computer, these tips may help you avoid breakage or theft.
- Keep the laptop with you and in sight at all times. This includes while you are attending a conference: during breaks, take it with you.
- Do not "advertise" that you are carrying a laptop. Laptops are hot commodities and may be a target for theft. Keep a low profile. Consider using a non-descript bag, with a padded pouch for the laptop inside.
- While on an airplane, place the laptop under the seat in front of you. Do not place it in the overhead storage area as it could easily get bumped and damaged there.
- Do not pack a laptop in your checked baggage.
- Make sure the laptop battery is charged before you go to the airport; expect to be required to remove a laptop from its carrying case. You may also be required to power it on to demonstrate to security that the laptop is a functioning computer.
- Allow security to x-ray the laptop; x-ray equipment will not harm it.
- Wait until the last moment to put the laptop on the security conveyor belt, and keep an eye on it as it comes out the other side: pick it up as soon as you are able to.
- Lock the laptop in the hotel safe while you are not in your room. If there is no safe available, either bring the laptop with you or lock it to a secure object in your room.
- Keep your laptop free of unnecessary sensitive information. Do not carry social security, credit card, or identifiable patient information unless that is necessary to your work. And don't keep the username and password with the computer.
