Laptops & Video Data Projectors Available to Faculty and Staff: Loan Policy

Technology Media Services makes available Windows and Macintosh laptops, and video data projectors for faculty and staff to borrow for Simmons-related work (e.g. doing research or making presentations on behalf of Simmons College). The number of laptops and projectors in this pool is very limited.

Conditions of loans:

  • Laptops and projectors may not be borrowed for personal use.
  • Laptops may not be borrowed to temporarily replace Simmons-owned faculty/staff computers that are not working.
  • Loan period: Laptops and projectors can be checked out for a period of 7 calendar days. Loans exceeding one week require special arrangements be made prior to checkout, including a note from the department head indicating why an extended loan is necessary.
  • Reservations: Borrowers may reserve a laptop or projector once each semester. Faculty and staff who need a laptop or projector more than once per semester may borrow on a first-come first-served basis.
  • All loans, no matter duration or importance, are subject to availability.
  • All loans are subject to the Simmons College Technology Fine Policy. If a laptop or projector is brought back late, or without all of its components (e.g. cords and cables), the faculty or staff member will be asked to pay a fine.

Support and training:

  • At the time of check out, the faculty or staff member will be given instructions about how to set up and operate the equipment, for example, connecting a laptop to a projector or working with any accessories being borrowed.
  • If the borrower needs to install software or make configuration changes that require administrative rights, s/he will be asked to sign Technology's administrative rights statement and be given an administrative account and password.
  • Borrowers are responsible for understanding any software or hardware they need that falls outside of the Simmons standard.
  • Off-site support is limited to support for laptops via telephone (617-521-2222) and email (helpdesk@simmons.edu) during Simmons Help Desk hours
  • Once the laptop is returned, it will be re-imaged, erasing any information you have saved anywhere on the computer. Please make sure to save any new or modified files to your personal file server folder, to a CD-ROM, or to a USB flash storage device before returning the laptop.
